This week, a sweet friend gave me this yellow watering can. With a butterfly crafted on the pouring spout, and the color being yellow, it is truly a day-brightener to me. I enjoy watering a few plants that I keep by the window where the sunshine comes into our house.
Also this week, I Corinthians 3:5-7 has been in my reading and meditation. “Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.”
Just as someone else sowed the seeds of these plants initially, my part in the process is watering them in order to help them live more fruitfully. Ultimately, God is the One Who sustains life, but I can have a part in nurturing the life He gives. To see growth is a rewarding process and a reminder that even more important than nurturing God’s creation of plants is nurturing His creation of people.
Sometimes, faithfully nurturing relationships with the people God has entrusted specifically to our care gets mundane. The seemingly menial task of filling a can with water and taking it to each plant regularly is vital to healthy growth. If we do not intentionally water and edify, relationships begin to wilt.
Our lives as Christian women can be compared to a watering can – a vessel filled with the Holy Spirit, pouring out the Water of the Word to encourage growth and speak life to others.
Wouldn’t you like to be a yellow watering can with a butterfly spout in the hands of our Lord? We can be instruments through which He gives the increase.
