I Want to “Be” a Grayheaded Preacher

Updated: Sep 24, 2023

"Are there better preachers of the works of God to be found than hoary parents in the circle of their children; or grandparents in that of their grandchildren?" —Augustus F. Tholuck.

No, I do not want to be a preacher in the church pulpit! God set the order of His church to be led by male pastors with godly men as deacons assisting in the work and leadership of the church. The purpose of my writing is not to debate Bible doctrine.

When I read the quote above, my thoughts went immediately to my changing hair color. I do not think of myself as "old" inside, but my age number, my hair color, and my body are telling me differently.

Our first grandchild is on her way to meet us in a few months! With children of my own still at home, I'm not sure of which grandparent name fits my liking yet. 😀 I hear that grandparenting is wonderful, and I'm excited to enter this new season of my life.

I do not want to be called "preacher" for sure, but I do want our grandchild (and children) to know and hear that their Creator is the Most High God. I want them to know Him personally, and that He loves them so much! I want them to know He is righteous, holy, powerful, saving, loving, gracious, just, strong, kind, and so much more! I want them to know that He does great things, and that He created them to walk with Him to the praise of His glory.

I do want my life to preach these truths about God louder than my words - not in a Sunday pulpit, but in all the ordinary days at home and wherever I am.

"O God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works. Now also when I am old and greyheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come. Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high, who hast done great things: O God, who is like unto thee!" - Psalm 71:17-19

The verse says, "Forsake me not.. until..."

Even with silver highlights in my hair, I need the Lord to help me as He has to this point. His goodness and mercy follow me in my insufficient strength and imperfect thinking. His grace fills the cracks in my heart and life.

"We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done. That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children: That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments..." - Psalm 78:4,6-7

With God's help, I want to be a grayheaded grandmother whose life preaches Jesus. 🩷
