Thrifting Books While Writing My Own

They say that writers are readers… it may be so! Or maybe we’re just word collectors?

At our local outreach ministry thrift store, every Thursday is a book sale: ALL THE BOOKS YOU CAN FIT INTO A BAG FOR $2.00! Pictured is my two bags for $4.00! The store clerk even carried them to my vehicle for me!
Part of the fun of thrifting books is looking through the shelves for treasures that cost a little bit of nothing! It’s a relaxing, therapeutic mission with the byproduct of helping the thrift store move items out.
Finding good books is like a “Morning Joy” ~ a surprise gift from God that says, “I see you. I hear you. I love you. Here’s a little something to remind you of My love today.”
• Some of the books I pulled off the shelf without opening because I have read the authors before.
• Some books required a bit of thought as to whether they held any value to take up space in my bag.
• Some of these books handled by previous hands hold untold helps found inside the books.
• Some of the books were obviously never perused.
• Some books are of interest to me, and some are possibilities that family members may enjoy.
Books on my shelves decorate my home and deepen my heart.

Questions arise:
• Why was this book discarded?
• Was this book well-loved by one and unwanted by another?
• Why am I drawn to this old book?
• Where am I going to put these old books?
• Will one of the books I write be considered a treasure in a thrift store one day?
• Will my book ever be finished?
• Which of these books will be quoted in my own book?

Books on my shelves quietly invite me to keep growing.
If you enjoy book thrifting, I’d like to see a picture of some of your finds!
